Appreciate your Publicist!

by Mom on April 23, 2011

I’ve had the fortune and pleasure to work with a fabulous PR agency in my last corporate gig.

So now that I’m solo again, I’m trying to do what she taught me for RTW. I’m creating media lists, writing releases, and trying to think “out of the box.”

Can I tell you how much WORK it is to do?!?!?

Lesson learned: when someone is good at what they do, they make it look easy.

The Importance of Self-Care

by Mom on April 23, 2011

Where has the time gone!?

It’s been 3 months and 10 days since my last hair appointment.

Yes, I tried to do the “box” thing, but it didn’t go well.

I can see roots of what I’ve been denying for years.

Not to mention feeling a little shaggy and uneven. I haven’t even seen the back of my hair since January (lost hand mirror in the move).

I can’t network like this! So, I’m goin’ in Wednesday to get coiffed and colored.

Lesson learned: Don’t neglect yourself. You are your biggest asset.

p.s. – I think I can hold off on the pedicure til it actually gets over 50 degrees for 5 straight days.

Right vs Right Enough

by Mom on April 21, 2011

This is fun. I’m laying the groundwork to properly launch my biz here in NJ. Of course, there is always the internal battle between getting it exactly right and getting it right-enough.

Looking to switch on the marketing engine before the end of May. But the networking needs to start next week. This is where the balance between home/work/other gets a little tricky.

Meanwhile, lots to do. Gotta go.

Action!

by Mom on March 21, 2011

It feels good to be in action mode with focus. Today I set up the biz as an LLC, renewed my association with RESA, ordered new business cards and car signs, and am updating my insurance.  Next I’ll update my website and add autoresponders to my email marketing program.

All this on a “snow day”!

Next step – sales, sales, sales!

The Reality of Perception

by Mom on March 7, 2011

I feel like I’m on a game show where you have to complete X number of tasks in X amount of time. But success isn’t necessarily measured in absolutes.

Perception plays a key as well. Making visual progress on tasks with political clout just might extend the amount of time you’ll have to work on the “lesser” tasks. Oh, and “lesser” does not mean not important or even critical.

It’s all in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes you’ve got to know who to strategically please first. It’s a long-term strategy.

This is true whether your working the corporate game, working for a smaller business, working your own business, or running your household. Get your game face on!

Staging, Take Two

by Mom on February 23, 2011

I’ve been in this house one month and six days. We’re mostly unpacked, and most of the critical rooms are operational. Time to turn my thoughts to work.

I’ve begun to lay out the plan to relaunch Rooms That Work. Smartly. By that, I mean with the benefit of all lessons learned in the past. I know exactly what my cost of entry should be, the best way to market this sort of business, and what I expect to get out of it. This time, I’ll construct a more structured (albeit still one page) business plan.

A side benefit is that I’m getting back into learning what’s new in online marketing. I had gotten away from some of that when the job and move distractions were peaking. Things change fast, and it’s exciting to see what is new.

It’s ironic – one reason I’ve been keeping a journal of my journey here at Digzing is to perhaps be able to help others get where they want to go faster. Looks like my notes will help myself as well. I’ll start with reading this blog from the beginning.

Back to the Weekly Schedule

by Mom on February 7, 2011

What a difference a week makes! I’m a few projects further along in settling in, and I have reactivated my weekly schedule. It’s structured in that there are daily to-do’s, but for projects, I broke them into four categories:

  1. Home stuff: will do/must do
  2. Home stuff: might do/maybe
  3. Work stuff: will do/must do
  4. Work stuff: might do/maybe

Not only will it help keep me focused, it will keep my priorities in line as well.  Hmmm, wonder if I should have added #5) goof off a little? Might be necessary.

Monday Morning Grocery Store Mishap

by Mom on February 2, 2011

I’m feeling some deja vous – I remember transitioning into my non-J.O.B. world back in 2007. My ideals were quickly adjusted to fit with reality. But this time, hopefully, I will remember my lessons learned and avoid some pitfalls.

That said, I found myself off to a rocky start on Monday. I had big plans that involved the grocery store, the bank, the post office and my GPS. Oh yea, I was going to do it all AND before my morning Kindergartener got off the bus at noon. The reality? I only made it to the grocery store, and didn’t even get everything on my list. Who knew that Monday morning is when the elderly are bussed to that grocery store! Not me.

Sure, I was at a disadvantage…first in finding the store, and then in finding anything IN the store. Ah, but those are mere excuses. Gotta step up my game. Because the sooner I get a handle on settling in, the sooner I can turn my thoughts to relaunching Rooms That Work.

Resolution

by Mom on January 29, 2011

Good news…I’m one step closer to my 2011 goal of: 1) simplify, 2) prioritize and 3) focus.

I finally received resolution for the j-o-b, and mercifully, the product will be terminated. It’s not that the biz didn’t have merit, it’s that it was not capable of creating the level of revenue the company required within the timing desired. That said, I am darn proud of what we accomplished considering the resources we had to work with.

The timing is perfect. Now that I’ve simplified what is on my plate by removing that distraction, here are my priorities:

  1. family
  2. home
  3. work

Tactically, that means:

  • I will be more involved with my kids…from playtime to homework time.
  • I will now have time to properly unpack and settle us into our new home.
  • I will also step up my game in the kitchen. I’m both figuratively and literally “cooking with gas” now!
  • I will relaunch my home staging business here in NJ.

Wish me luck with the “focus” part!

Shades of Gray

by Mom on January 24, 2011

Well, I made it to NJ. We’re (mostly) moved in and about 70% unpacked.

The kids are at their new school, hubby is enjoying parking in a garage again, and I’m back at work in a bigger, better home office.

Working? Doing what, you may wonder. Me too!

I’m still employed to market a B2C product, but the future of said product is still up in the air. I’m also well-poised to relaunch my staging business locally, but cannot do so until I know the fate of the j.o.b. – so, I’ll work and unpack until it’s all figured out.

It’s a good chance to practice patience in a shades-of-gray world. ;)

A Day Off

by Mom on December 25, 2010

It’s Christmas Day.

It’s been a strange one this year. No tree, no Christmas cards, and (thanks to the unwelcome stomach flu that attacked the entire family) no big holiday feast. In fact, I’m still in my jammies!  We skipped on some holiday details due to the pending move (that’s my story, I’m sticking to it).

But here’s what I loved about today. I did nothing for most of the day. I felt no guilt. I played with the kids. And for fun, I picked out paint colors for the new house.

Now the day isn’t over and yes, I’m doing some cleaning (thanks to the flu). But it’s at a relaxed pace and I’m not multi-tasking for once.

I guess you could say it has truly been a day off. Much needed by all!

Maybe we’ll get around to actually baking the Christmas cookies tomorrow.

Merry Christmas!
